Creating a Profession for PLM Practitioners

The Home of Professional PLM

The PLM industry needs a recognised, worldwide professional structure for the people who work within it. The Professional PLM Initiative has been set up to fulfil this need.

The Initiative covers the whole spectrum of what it means to be 'professional' in PLM.  This will be a significant step forward, and will change the way that PLM practitioners work.

The Initiative is inclusive and interactive.  This web site shows the latest developments, and how you can get involved.

Working Group

The Working Group is a team of PLM enthusiasts who will produce some of the primary deliverables of the Foundation Stage in order to further the progress towards a profession.

As with everything in the Professional PLM Initiative, this is a group of equals working as a Round Table.  It may hold face-to-face meetings, but the main mode of operation is by email and team messaging, so geographical location is not a difficulty.

The Working Group has started to operate, and is looking to expand.  The parameters of the Group are set out below, and participation is open to PLM practitioners from any organisation or in any role, from any country.

Terms of Reference

The parameters of the Working Group are set out below.

Definition

The Working Group is the main working team expediting the Initiative workload.

Purpose

To provide active, knowledgeable, detailed drafting of working and finished material to the Professional PLM Initiative.

Structure

The Working Group is a self-organising group of volunteers working together informally in a round table format.

Characteristics

Active involvement; writing; validation; sharing of knowledge; enthusiasm; networking.

Composition

Initial quorum formed from the Foundation Stage Launch Meetings. New members are welcome by invitation.  Members can retire from the WG without obligation, and offer to return, if their available time decreases or increases.

Entry Requirements

Demonstrable PLM experience and expertise.  The ability to input around 2-3 hours per week, or 5-10 hours per month, to WG activity.

Modus Operandi

The Working Group organises itself to carry out the tasks in hand, using its preferred methods of communication.  The PLMIG fulfils the role editor of ongoing material, and of its incorporation into the Initiative documentation set.

Structure

The Working Group will be self-organising, and so it will find its best way of working.  The PLMIG will act as Editor, both of the deliverables and of integrating the new written material into the overall Initiative documentation set.

The Group would like to expand, as more members will increase its capability.  As well as the Terms of Reference above, the primary requirements for new participants are a proactive approach, and the desire to share expertise rather than learn from the experience.  Other parts of the Initiative are a learning tool (see here) but the Working Group needs experienced practitioners.
